German railway emergency money — Eisenbahngeld — was a direct product of the hyperinflation crisis of 1923, when the Reichsbahn's Bavarian branch could no longer pay its workers with currency that retained value long enough to reach payday. The Reichsverkehrsministerium authorized regional offices to issue their own notgeld, and the Bayern Zweigstelle became one of the more prolific producers. Carl Gerber in Munich handled the printing, keeping the entire operation local at a time when speed mattered more than prestige.
The one-million mark denomination, staggering by any peacetime measure, was already losing ground to inflation by the time notes left the press.
