Küstrin's million-mark overstamp on an existing 5 Mark stock is a direct artifact of the hyperinflation spiral of summer–autumn 1923, when municipal authorities across Germany were authorized to issue notgeld to fill the void left by the Reichsbank's inability to supply denominations fast enough. Overprinting on previously printed — and suddenly worthless — lower denominations was cheaper and faster than commissioning new plates, and Carl Flemming AG in Glogau was one of the busier provincial printers meeting that demand.
Küstrin itself, a fortress town on the Oder, would be absorbed into the new Polish administrative boundary after World War II and renamed Kostrzyn. Its municipal paper from 1923 is consequently among the rarer Brandenburg notgeld issues.
