Pößneck is a small textile-manufacturing town in Thuringia, and this note is a product of the hyperinflationary summer of 1923, when municipal authorities across Germany were forced to issue their own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to meet payroll. The overprint method was standard practice for second-wave notgeld: existing printed stock of lower denominations was restamped with a new face value as the inflation made the originals worthless almost upon delivery.
The dry seal and watermark on the underlying 100 Mark sheet were already present from the original printing run, giving the issuing authority a rudimentary fraud deterrent it could apply without commissioning entirely new paper.
