Ornate Art Nouveau lateral borders carry diamond-shaped lozenges bearing the denomination figure '1.000.000' in vertical orientation, flanked by foliate scroll cartouches at each corner. The text is set in Gothic Fraktur script, with the issuer's name and branch at the top, the promise-to-pay clause in the centre, and the denomination 'Eine Million Mark' in a bold framed panel; a red diagonal overprint reading 'Nur zur Verrechnung' (for clearing purposes only) crosses the central area, and the place-and-date line 'Leipzig, d. 16. Aug. 1923' appears at lower left above two manuscript signatures, with the co-signatory block of Commerz- und Privat-Bank Aktiengesellschaft, Filiale Leipzig at lower right. |

The Mitteldeutsche Creditbank was a regional commercial bank headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, operating branches across central Germany during the Weimar hyperinflationary spiral. Its Leipzig branch issued this note under the emergency currency provisions — Notgeld — that allowed private banks, municipalities, and even individual businesses to produce their own denominations when the Reichsbank simply could not supply paper money fast enough to match the collapsing value of the Mark.
By mid-1923, a million marks was barely enough to buy a newspaper. Wezel & Naumann, a Leipzig printing firm with substantial commercial and securities printing experience, handled production locally — which kept turnaround fast, a genuine operational necessity when denominations became obsolete within weeks.
