Langquaid is a small market town in Lower Bavaria — the kind of community that had no business issuing its own currency, yet did exactly that during the hyperinflation of 1923 when the Reichsmark collapsed fast enough to make local emergency money a practical necessity rather than a novelty. These Notgeld issues from municipal savings banks were authorized under desperate administrative tolerance rather than any formal legal framework.
Josef Märkl designed the note locally, with printing handled by Heinrich Schiele's graphic arts firm in Regensburg. The million-mark denomination, staggering in nominal terms, represented purchasing power that was shrinking by the hour when these were issued.
