The Lippische Landesbank was the state credit institution of Lippe, one of Germany's smallest federal states — a principality of barely 150,000 people that nonetheless had the authority to issue its own emergency currency during the hyperinflation of 1923. This million-Mark note was printed locally in Detmold, the Lippische capital, rather than through one of the major Reich printing houses overwhelmed by demand that year.
By the time notes of this denomination became necessary, the printing and distribution cycle had collapsed to days. Many Notgeld issues from smaller states were rendered worthless before they even reached circulation.
