Landesbank der Provinz Westfalen was one of dozens of regional and municipal institutions forced into emergency currency issuance during the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank could no longer supply enough physical notes to meet the collapsing purchasing power of the Mark. A. Berger of Laupheim was a minor provincial printer pressed into service precisely because the major security printers — Reichsdruckerei included — were overwhelmed.
Three signatures were required for validation, an unusual arrangement that reflects the institutional caution of a provincial bank unaccustomed to currency issuance of any kind.
