| Description de l’avers | Printed in deep red on cream paper, the obverse is enclosed within an ornate letterpress border of scrollwork and foliate cartouches. A vertical blue guilloche underprint band runs centrally across the note. The heading 'GUTSCHEIN' is set in large gothic type above the issuer's name, with the denomination numeral '1 000 000 Mk.' in bold display type at centre, below which the amount in words and the place and date 'Hannover-Linden, 10. August 1923' are inscribed in script lettering. A manuscript signature of the board of the Kreissparkasse appears at lower centre, with the serial number and series letter printed in blue at the right margin. |

The Kreissparkasse des Landkreises Linden was one of hundreds of municipal and district savings institutions that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — during the hyperinflationary spiral of 1923. By the time million-mark denominations became necessary, the Reichsbank's printing capacity was simply overwhelmed; local authorities were legally permitted, then practically compelled, to fill the gap themselves. A million marks in mid-1923 was not a large sum — within weeks of such notes entering circulation, they were already losing purchasing power faster than they could be spent.
The guilloche underprint was the issuer's principal deterrent against counterfeiting, though at this inflationary velocity, sophisticated forgery was barely worth the effort.
