Herzogenrath, a small industrial town on the Belgian-Dutch border in the Rhineland, was among hundreds of German municipalities and private firms that issued emergency currency — Notgeld — as hyperinflation rendered Reichsbank notes functionally worthless in 1923. The Glaswerke Bicheroux notes were almost certainly produced to pay workers at the glassworks itself, a common practice when wages had to be disbursed faster than the central bank could supply denominations large enough to cover them.

The watermarked paper is worth noting — most private Notgeld at this inflation tier dispensed with security features entirely. Someone at Bicheroux made a deliberate choice to use better stock.
