Aachen's Chamber of Commerce turned to local printer Aug. Heinrigs when the Reichsbank could no longer supply currency fast enough to keep pace with hyperinflation in 1923. Notes like this one — Notgeld issued by commercial and municipal bodies rather than state banks — briefly formed the operational backbone of everyday transactions as the official currency disintegrated. The million-mark denomination, which would have seemed grotesque eighteen months earlier, was unremarkable by mid-1923.
The blue distinguishes this from parallel issues in other colors produced by the same chamber during the same period, a simple differentiation method when successive emergency printings were churned out within weeks of each other.
