Beschrijving voorzijde The obverse is printed in dark blue-black on a pale guilloche underprint and carries the Gothic-script header '1000000 Gutschein 1000000' across the top. A central panel bears the denomination 'Eine Million Mark' in large ornate lettering, flanked by two side vignettes set within decorative baroque cartouches: to the left, a seated male figure holding a rod or tool, and to the right, a female bust in period dress. Below the denomination panel, a text block states the redemption terms, the issuing date of 1 August 1923, and the full issuer name 'August Thyssen-Hütte, Gewerkschaft, Gewerkschaften Friedrich Thyssen, Lemberg, Rhein I.', with two facsimile signatures beneath. A red serial number is printed vertically along the right margin.

Opmerkingen

August-Thyssen-Hütte was one of the largest steel producers in the Ruhr, and during the hyperinflation of 1923 it — like hundreds of German industrial firms — issued its own Notgeld simply to meet payroll. The Reichsbank could not print fast enough. By mid-1923, a million marks was roughly the daily wage of a single worker, which gives some sense of why this denomination was practical rather than extravagant.

Both Fritz and Julius Thyssen signing the note is notable — Fritz would later become infamous for his financial support of the Nazi party before breaking with Hitler in 1939 and fleeing Germany.
