Marienberg lies in the Erzgebirge, the ore-mining district of Saxony, and its Amtshauptmannschaft — a mid-tier administrative district, not a bank — issued this million-mark note as Notgeld during the hyperinflation peak of 1923. District and municipal authorities across Germany were printing emergency money by then because Reichsbank notes simply could not reach the provinces fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By August 1923, a million marks was barely enough for a loaf of bread.

Otto Henning A.G. in Greiz was a regional commercial printer pressed into currency work by demand, not specialization. Quality varied across their Notgeld output.
