Schleiz is a small administrative town in the Reuss principalities region of Thuringia, and like hundreds of German municipalities in 1923, it was forced into issuing its own emergency currency — Notgeld — as hyperinflation made Reichsbank supply wholly inadequate for daily commerce. By mid-1923, a million marks was roughly the price of a loaf of bread, which gives some sense of how rapidly this denomination became mundane rather than remarkable.
Otto Henning A.G. in nearby Greiz was a regional printer that handled Notgeld commissions for several Thuringian municipalities during this period, making the logistics straightforward even as the monetary situation was anything but.
