| Obverse description | Notgeld (emergency currency) issued on cream-coloured paper with a honeycomb guilloche underprint in pale red across the field. Mönchengladbach was among the hundreds of German municipalities forced into emergency currency production during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not print fast enough to meet demand. By the time million-mark denominations became necessary, local notgeld had shifted from the decorative, collector-oriented issues of 1921–22 into purely functional emergency instruments — printed fast, on whatever stock was available, and spent within days before the value collapsed further.
The watermarked paper is worth noting: at this denomination level, many municipal issuers had abandoned security features entirely, making the watermark here a minor anomaly.
