Auerbach's million-mark note is a product of the Papiermarkzeit's most chaotic weeks — mid-1923, when municipal and district authorities across Saxony were printing emergency currency faster than the Reichsbank could supply it. The Bezirksverband, essentially the administrative district council of Auerbach, had no business issuing currency but did so anyway, as did hundreds of comparable bodies throughout Weimar Germany. F. Ullmann in nearby Zwickau handled much of the regional notgeld printing demand during this period, making them a logical choice for speed over ceremony.

The guilloche underprint is the only mechanical security measure — adequate for a note whose useful life was measured in days before inflation outpaced its face value entirely.
