Opmerkingen

Marburg's district treasury was one of thousands of German local authorities forced into emergency currency issuance during the hyperinflation of 1923, when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical notes to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time a million-mark denomination made practical sense, a loaf of bread cost considerably more. The Hessischer Verlag K. Euker, a local Marburg publisher, handled the printing — a reminder that much Notgeld at this level of the crisis was produced by whatever commercial printer happened to be nearby.

The embossed stamp served as the primary authentication measure, replacing the more sophisticated security printing that a specialized banknote printer would have provided.
