The issue date Weiden-Opf., den 14. Weiden's million-mark note is a product of the hyperinflation peak of summer 1923, when German municipal and district authorities were legally empowered to issue their own emergency currency — Notgeld — to fill the vacuum left by the Reichsbank's inability to supply sufficient denominations fast enough to keep pace with collapsing purchasing power. By the time notes like this reached the public, a million marks would buy roughly what a few pfennigs had purchased two years earlier.
Otto Spintler was a local commercial printer, not a specialist banknote house. That provenance matters: the security features are essentially absent, and the paper stock varies between surviving examples.
