Obverse description Olive-green guilloche underprint covers the entire field, enclosed within a plain ruled border. The denomination "Eine Million Mark" is set in large, bold blackletter (Fraktur) script dominating the centre of the note, with the payment obligation text in smaller Fraktur beneath. A serial number appears in the upper right corner, and a circular municipal seal is impressed at the lower left; the issue date "1. August 1923" and the authority "Der Magistrat" with two manuscript signatures appear at the foot.

Reverse description The reverse repeats the olive-green geometric guilloche underprint within a ruled border, mirroring the obverse layout. The denomination "Eine Million Mark" is again rendered in large bold Fraktur script at centre, flanked above and below by two blocks of explanatory text in smaller Fraktur: the upper block pledges the assets and taxing power of the City of Herne as security for redemption, while the lower block states that the note loses validity one month after public recall in the Herner Tageszeitungen.
