Three institutions — the Gewerbebanken in Balingen, Ebingen, and Tailfingen, together with the Oberamtssparkasse Balingen — jointly issued this emergency million-mark note during the catastrophic hyperinflation of 1923, when municipal and regional bodies across Germany were authorized to produce Notgeld to keep local commerce moving. By mid-1923, the Reichsbank's own printing infrastructure simply could not produce currency fast enough to meet demand.

The collaboration between three commercial banks and a district savings institution on a single note is unusual even within the chaotic Notgeld output of that period. Joint-issue pieces from this corner of Baden-Württemberg are underrepresented in major collections.
