A central oval vignette set within an interlaced wreath cartouche presents an industrial landscape of factory buildings, a steam engine, chimneys, and a water tower evocative of the Zwickau mining and manufacturing district; the denomination "M. 1000000" is printed vertically in large Gothic numerals in both lateral margins, with the serial number and printer's imprint at the lower right. |

Zwickau's Amtshauptmannschaft — a regional administrative district rather than a municipal authority — issued this million-mark note during the hyperinflationary collapse of 1923, when the Reichsbank's supply of emergency currency consistently lagged behind the pace of price increases. Local and district authorities across Saxony were forced to commission their own Notgeld from whatever printers could handle the work quickly. F. Ollmann G.m.b.H., a Zwickau commercial printer, was not a specialist banknote press.
By the time notes of this denomination reached circulation, the purchasing power of one million marks was already negligible.
