Ochsenfurt is a small Franconian town on the Main river, best known for its sugar refinery. In 1923, as Reichsbank notes became worthless faster than they could be printed, hundreds of German municipal and district authorities issued their own emergency currency — Notgeld — simply to keep local wages and commerce moving. This note is one of those instruments, authorized by the Bezirksgemeinde (district council) rather than any banking institution.
Georg Goldstein's involvement is uncommon enough to note — most Notgeld at this denomination tier was produced with minimal design investment, since the inflationary spiral made elaborate artwork an absurdity. Reinhold Pfeiffer in Würzburg handled a significant volume of Franconian emergency currency during this period.
