Reverse description Printed entirely in red and black, the reverse is dominated by a large central rectangular panel enclosing an oval guilloche underprint field, within which the denomination 'MARK 1000000' is set in bold Gothic numerals above a Fraktur redemption clause. Symmetrical decorative frames with stylised geometric and starburst ornaments occupy the left and right lateral panels, each bearing the inscription 'STADT CASSEL' in a cartouche. The issuer's name appears in banner scrolls at the top and bottom, with the denomination '1.000.000' repeated in the four corner panels.

Kassel issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — throughout the hyperinflation crisis, and by August 1923 the municipal authority had no choice but to print denominations unthinkable even eighteen months earlier. H. Grünbaum was a local printer, not a specialist banknote firm, which is characteristic of late-phase Notgeld production: the Reichsdruckerei was overwhelmed, and cities sourced whoever could put ink on paper fast enough to keep pace with price increases that were, by that summer, doubling within days.

Municipal Notgeld at this denomination was legal tender only within a limited area and had a short validity window before being recalled and replaced with still-higher values.
