The denomination 'Eine Million Mark.' is set in a large bold Gothic typeface across the lower centre, with the place and date of issue 'Marne (Holstein), 22. August 1923' below; two purple ink cancellation crosses and a manuscript signature appear at the foot. A vertical marginal notice in small Fraktur script runs along the left edge.

备注

Marne is a small market town in the Dithmarschen district, and its municipal administration — like hundreds of German local authorities in 1923 — was forced to print its own emergency currency when the Reichsbank simply could not supply enough physical notes to keep pace with hyperinflation. By August of that year, the mark was collapsing so fast that denominations which would have seemed absurdly large in 1921 were functionally useless within weeks of printing.

Local Notgeld at the million-mark level was often printed on whatever stock was available, which is why paper quality and ink consistency vary considerably within the same issue. Marne's note was printed locally, not contracted to one of the larger specialist printers handling volume runs for the bigger municipalities.
