The one-million lira denomination existed because Turkey's inflation crisis, running nearly unbroken from the 1970s through the early 2000s, had rendered smaller denominations functionally worthless. By 2003 the lira had lost so much ground that this coin, worth less than a single US dollar, required seven figures to express it. The government redenominated in 2005, introducing the New Turkish Lira at a conversion rate of 1,000,000 to 1, retiring the entire series.
The KM#1139.2 designation distinguishes the Istanbul mint striking from the earlier Ankara issues.
