Hell Bank Notes are votive offerings burned at funerals and ancestral rituals in Chinese folk religious practice, intended to transfer wealth to the deceased in the afterlife. The "Hell Bank Corporation" imprint is a 20th-century commercial convention — earlier offerings used simpler spirit money without elaborate banknote formatting. The adoption of realistic-looking currency design accelerated significantly after the mid-20th century, when Hong Kong manufacturers began mass-producing these for export to diaspora communities worldwide.
