A privately issued Notgeld from the height of the German hyperinflation, this billion-mark note was produced by a textile company — a spinning and weaving mill in Steinen, Baden — to pay its own workers when the Reichsbank simply could not supply currency fast enough. Firms across southern Germany resorted to this in 1923, and many printed their own denominations faster than the government could print zeroes.
Uehlin of Schopfheim, a regional commercial printer, handled production. The choice was purely logistical — close, fast, and available.
