Issuer name appears at upper left and right corners, with "Duisburg" and "Meiderich" at lower corners. | 备注 |
Rheinische Stahlwerke A.G. was one of the major Ruhr steel concerns, and like dozens of German industrial firms in late 1923, it issued its own emergency currency — Notgeld — as the Reichsbank's paper became functionally worthless faster than it could be printed and distributed. A billion marks. By November 1923, that figure was unremarkable; it bought less than a loaf of bread.
The watermark is notably deliberate for corporate Notgeld, which was often produced under extreme time pressure with minimal security features. Its presence here suggests the firm used a pre-existing paper stock from an established supplier rather than the cheapest available stock.
