Bielefeld's fabric-based emergency currency is among the most discussed Notgeld of the entire 1923 hyperinflation. The city had been producing linen and silk notes since 1921 — partly as novelty issues aimed at collectors, but by mid-1923 the practical calculation had flipped entirely: cloth held its physical value longer than paper pulp disintegrating under runaway inflation. This one-billion-mark denomination reflects just how fast the numbers moved in the autumn of 1923, when the Reichsmark was losing value by the hour.
Gundlach printed on woven linen rather than standard note stock, creating a notoriously uneven impression that varied across the fabric weave.
