| Obverse description | Green-tinted notgeld note with a green guilloche underprint across the central field. The large bold denomination 'EINE MILLIARDE MARK' is printed in heavy black letterpress type dominating the upper central area. A small circular eagle vignette appears to the left of the main text block, which sets out the redemption obligation of the municipal and district cashiers of Dortmund and Hörde, dated 15 October 1923. Two manuscript signatures appear below the issuing authority text, with a red serial number at the lower right; a cautionary notice runs along the top margin and the authorization line of the Reichsminister der Finanzen appears along the bottom margin. |

German municipal notgeld of the hyperinflation period was produced by hundreds of local authorities scrambling to keep wages payable as Reichsbank notes became obsolete faster than they could be distributed. Dortmund's joint issue by the Stadt- und Landkreise Dortmund und Hörde — the combined urban and rural districts — reflects exactly that administrative improvisation: two separate governmental bodies pooling resources to back a single emergency emission rather than issuing competing paper.
One billion marks. By late 1923, that figure bought less than a loaf of bread had cost a year prior.
