| Beschrijving voorzijde | Typeset Notgeld in dark green letterpress on a rose-red guilloche underprint, divided into a wide left panel and a narrower right coupon stub separated by a decorative border. The left panel carries the title 'Gutschein' in Gothic script at the top, the denomination 'Eine Milliarde Mark' in large blackletter type at centre, the issuing authority, date of issue (12. Oktober 1923), an expiry clause, and an anti-counterfeiting warning at the foot. The right coupon stub repeats the denomination vertically in tall Gothic lettering within an ornate guilloche cartouche, with the serial number printed horizontally at the lower right margin. |

Stollberg's district authority — the Amtshauptmannschaft — issued this billion-mark note during the hyperinflation peak of autumn 1923, when municipal and regional bodies across Germany were legally empowered to print their own emergency currency, or Notgeld, to address a simple logistical crisis: the Reichsbank could not print fast enough. By October 1923, a single US dollar was worth roughly 4.2 trillion marks.
Rats-Druckerei R. Dulce in nearby Glauchau handled the presswork — a small commercial printer pressed into monetary service, as happened across Saxony that year.
