One trillion marks, issued by the district committee of Sankt Goarshausen — a small administrative district on the right bank of the Rhine — during the final weeks of Germany's hyperinflation peak in late 1923. By November of that year, the Reichsbank's own notes were struggling to keep pace with denomination requirements, which forced hundreds of local authorities, municipalities, and private firms to issue their own emergency currency (Notgeld) at astronomical face values.

At the exchange rate prevailing when notes like this circulated, one trillion marks bought roughly what a single mark had purchased a decade earlier.
