Memo Euros are a long-running series of souvenir notes produced by Euroscope, a Dutch novelty publisher, specifically designed to be non-negotiable collectibles rather than circulating currency. Printed by Royal Joh. Enschedé — the Haarlem security printer that has produced genuine banknotes and stamps for governments worldwide since the early eighteenth century — the production quality is considerably higher than typical tourist ephemera. Enschedé's involvement means proper security-grade paper and printing processes, which gives these pieces an unusual tactile authenticity for something never intended to pass through a cash register.
Hallstatt, the Austrian lakeside village in the Salzkammergut, has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997 partly on the strength of its prehistoric salt-mining history stretching back over 7,000 years.
