The zero-euro souvenir note program, administered by the ESBA and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, began in earnest around 2015 and has since produced thousands of distinct designs for tourist sites, museums, and zoos across Europe. Each note carries genuine security features — including a serial number, holographic strip, and correct-format EURion constellation — making them technically indistinguishable in construction from circulating currency, though they carry no legal tender status and no central bank obligation. The Karlsruhe Zoologischer Stadtgarten, founded in 1865, is one of the oldest combined zoo and botanical gardens in Germany.
