Zero-euro souvenir notes have been produced by Oberthur Fiduciaire under licence from the European Central Bank since 2015, sold directly to tourists as collectibles with no legal tender status anywhere. The Lagos Zoo, situated in the western Algarve, is one of the smaller regional institutions to have commissioned an issue — most Portuguese entries in the programme come from higher-profile national sites.
Oberthur incorporates genuine security features into these notes, including holograms and microprinting, which makes them technically more sophisticated than many circulating low-denomination banknotes worldwide.
