The zero euro souvenir note program was launched in France in 2015 by Richard Faille, initially targeting tourist sites and cultural institutions looking for a low-cost, high-margin retail product. Oberthur Fiduciaire prints the entire series under license, incorporating genuine banknote security features — including a holographic stripe and UV-reactive inks — despite the denomination carrying no legal tender value anywhere.
Bratislava Zoo, founded in 1960 on the slopes of the Small Carpathians, joined a program that by 2019 had expanded to hundreds of European issuing sites. The notes are legal to produce precisely because zero is the denomination.
