Villa Kérylos, perched on a rocky promontory at Beaulieu-sur-Mer, was built between 1902 and 1908 by archaeologist Théodore Reinach as a scholarly reconstruction of an ancient Greek dwelling — he subsequently lived in it, wearing tunics and bathing in the ancient manner. The Centre des Monuments Nationaux has administered it since 1928, and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the "Villas and Gardens of the French Riviera" listing, granted in 2021.
Oberthur Fiduciaire prints the entire CMN souvenir euro series under a contract arrangement that gives these notes genuine security printing credentials despite carrying no legal tender status anywhere. The 2023 date places this among the later CMN issues, by which point the collector market for these pieces was already well established.
