Utah Beach was the westernmost of the five Allied landing zones on 6 June 1944, assigned to the U.S. VII Corps under General J. Lawton Collins. Crucially, the assault force landed nearly two kilometers south of the intended position — a navigation error that, by accident, placed troops in front of lighter German defenses. Casualties were the lowest of any Normandy sector that day: around 197 dead and wounded against over 2,000 at Omaha.

The museum on-site opened in 1962 and was substantially expanded in 2011. Oberthur Fiduciaire, which prints genuine French fiscal documents, produces the entire Euro Souvenir program under ECB-approved zero-denomination specifications.
