Spišský hrad — Spiš Castle — is one of the largest castle ruins by footprint in Central Europe, a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched on a volcanic travertine hill above the Hornád river valley in eastern Slovakia. The 0 euro souvenir program, launched commercially after the European Central Bank's tacit approval of the format, exploits legal tender denomination rules in a neat way: face value is technically zero, so no central bank authorization is required, yet Oberthur produces them on genuine banknote paper with the same security printing infrastructure used for circulating issues.

Collector demand for site-specific issues in this series is driven almost entirely by tourism volume at the underlying attraction.
