Eurosouvenirs launched its licensed souvenir zero-euro program around 2015 in partnership with selected European cultural institutions, sports clubs, and tourist attractions. Benfica joined the series as one of several major football clubs to issue these collector pieces — legal tender in denomination only, meaning zero, which sidesteps every regulation governing actual currency issuance. Oberthur Fiduciaire prints them to genuine banknote specification, using the same security substrate and intaglio techniques applied to circulating euro notes, which is precisely what makes the program commercially viable as a collectible.
