Saint-Paul-de-Vence has been a magnet for modern artists since the 1920s, when figures like Chagall, Matisse, and Léger colonized the hilltop village and its surroundings. The Fondation Maeght, opened there in 1964, remains one of the most important private modern art institutions in Europe.
