Pope John Paul I — Albino Luciani — reigned for just 33 days in 1978, the shortest pontificate of the 20th century. His sudden death, never subjected to an official autopsy, generated decades of speculation and at least one serious journalistic investigation into Vatican finances. The 2019 souvenir issue appeared as his beatification cause was advancing through Rome, following John Paul II's formal approval of a miracle attributed to him in 2018.
Oberthur Fiduciaire printed this on banknote-grade paper with the full EuroSouvenir security specification — legal across the eurozone as a collector item but not tender.
