Oberthur Fiduciaire, one of the continent's major security printers, produces the bulk of the series — which lends them a construction quality that outlasts their novelty purpose.
The Pontmain apparition of January 1871 occurred during the Franco-Prussian War, when Prussian forces were advancing through the region. The reported Marian vision — witnessed by several children in the village — preceded a local Prussian withdrawal by days, a coincidence that drove the subsequent pilgrimage cult and eventual basilica construction in 1872.
