Pontmain, a village in Mayenne, became a pilgrimage site after an 1871 apparition reported by local children during the Franco-Prussian War — Prussian forces halted their advance toward the town shortly after, a coincidence that drove the Vatican's subsequent approval of the apparition in 1872.
