Ponte de Lima's claim as Portugal's oldest town rests on its 1125 royal charter — one of the earliest municipal charters in the country — though the site itself had been settled long before, with Roman bridge infrastructure still standing today. The zero-euro souvenir format was introduced commercially around 2015, with Oberthur Fiduciaire producing the notes to genuine euro security specifications: correct paper stock, UV-reactive inks, and microprinting, all legally permissible because the zero denomination carries no monetary value.
Oberthur's involvement gives these notes a higher production standard than most tourist ephemera. The Ponte de Lima issue is one of several hundred regional Portuguese subjects produced across the 2019–2020 window.
