The zero euro souvenir note program, administered by the Madrid-based European Association of Collectors of Souvenir Banknotes (MEAJ), launched in 2015 and has since produced hundreds of location-specific pieces printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire — the same French security printer behind numerous circulating issues across the eurozone. These notes carry legal face value of zero and are technically valid tender in no practical sense, but they are manufactured to full banknote specification, including genuine security paper and holographic strip, which is precisely their commercial appeal.
The Ponte Dom Luís I edition joins a long queue of Portuguese tourist-site releases. Oberthur's involvement keeps production quality consistent, though the collector market for these pieces is broad and the print runs are rarely disclosed.
