The Pont d'Avignon — properly the Pont Saint-Bénézet — is the subject of one of France's most recognizable folk songs, "Sur le Pont d'Avignon," which dates to at least the 15th century and references dancing on the bridge itself. Whether anyone actually danced there is disputed; the bridge's arches were narrow enough that dancing in any practical sense seems unlikely, and some historians argue the song referred to the island beneath it rather than the bridge proper.
