The 0 Euro souvenir scheme launched in France in 2016 as a commercial novelty — legal-tender denomination of zero, printed to official euro specifications, sold at a markup to tourists. Planète Sauvage, the safari park outside Nantes, was among the first wave of French attractions to commission an issue. Oberthur Fiduciaire produced them to the same security standards used for genuine banknotes, including proper intaglio printing, which is an unusual level of technical commitment for an object with no monetary function whatsoever.
