The Chassiron lighthouse, at the northern tip of Île d'Oléron, has marked the dangerous confluence of the Pertuis d'Antioche and the open Atlantic since 1696 — the current tower, rebuilt in 1836, stands 46 metres tall and remains operational. The zero-euro souvenir program, administered by the UERH and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, has issued hundreds of these tourist notes since 2015, all bearing the same EURion constellation and holographic strip that make them technically compliant with euro security printing standards despite carrying no monetary value. Oberthur's involvement ensures the substrate and intaglio printing are indistinguishable in hand-feel from circulating currency.
