The Ossuaire de Douaumont holds the remains of at least 130,000 unidentified French and German soldiers from the Battle of Verdun — one of the longest and most destructive engagements of the First World War. The zero-euro souvenir note program, administered by UECA and printed by Oberthur Fiduciaire, has made the ossuary one of its recurring subjects, partly because the site remains one of the most visited battlefield memorials in Europe.
Oberthur's involvement lends the series genuine security printing credentials — the watermark is not decorative window-dressing but production-line infrastructure from a firm that prints circulating currency for multiple sovereign states.
