Oradour-sur-Glane is one of the most documented atrocities committed on French soil during the German occupation — on 10 June 1944, four days after D-Day, the 2nd SS Panzer Division Das Reich massacred 643 villagers and burned the town to the ground. De Gaulle later ordered the ruins preserved as a permanent memorial; the destroyed village still stands untouched alongside its postwar replacement settlement.

The zero-euro souvenir format, sanctioned by the European Central Bank for commemorative use but carrying no legal tender status, has become the standard vehicle for French memorial and tourist-site issues. Oberthur Fiduciaire's involvement gives the note genuine security printing credentials.
